Description
A condom is a thin rubber sheath which fits over the man's erect penis just prior to intercourse. It is a vital weapon in the campaign to promote Safe Sex. When the man ejaculates, he does so into the condom, preventing sperm from entering the vagina, anus or mouth.
Most condoms are made of latex; although there are also higher-priced polyurethane varieties available. Both latex and polyurethane are considered a very effective means of protection from pregnancy and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Some condoms are made of animal intestine, but these are less effective for disease prevention. The latex or polyurethane condom is the recommended form of STD and pregnancy prevention.
Polyurethane condoms have the advantages over latex of being less abrasive and non-allergenic. This is important because polyurethane can be tolerated by anyone, unlike latex to which many people are allergic. Many women will also find the polyurethane more comfortable in male condoms. Latex is quite abrasive at a molecular level and a marathon session with latex can leave women quite sore, even with added lubrication. Polyurethane is much smoother and reduces the abrasion of very sensitive tissue.
Effectiveness
When condoms are used properly, they are about 90% effective in the prevention of pregnancy. Unfortunately, since many people don’t use them correctly, the actual effectiveness is in the mid 80% range.
Directions
Before using a condom, always check the expiry date. Never carry a condom in a hot, confined place (i.e., your wallet) and keep it out of direct sunlight. Squeeze and hold the tip to release the air and provide a space for the ejaculant (sperm) to fill. Then roll the condom down to the base of the penis. Some rolled material will remain at the base of the penis to make it easier to pull the condom off after ejaculation. Be sure that your fingernails or jewelry do not damage or rip the condom. After orgasm, the man should hold the base of the condom while withdrawing from the vagina (or anus). Once the penis is fully withdrawn the condom can be safely removed.
Remember the following points:
Never use a condom more than once.
Always use a latex or polyurethane condom for effective prevention of STDs.
Lubricated condoms are less likely to break during intercourse.
Always use water-based lubricants.
Use in combination with Spermicide for better protection.
Unlubricated condoms are best for oral sex.
Drawbacks
A minor problem with a condom is that you must interrupt foreplay momentarily to put it on – but why not both participate in putting it on, much more fun!
Oil-based lubricants such as petroleum jelly, edible oils and medications weaken latex condoms. If you wish to use lubricants during sex play make sure they are water based, such as Astro Glide.

Just after my wife and I have sex with a condon she complains that she has a burning feeling in her vagina. hey,i got a question about a condom, i am a virgin. i am just wondering if using maybe 2 or three condoms will decrease the chance of getting my girlfriend pregnant. we are young and if that happened i wouldnt know what to do with my life. should i maybe use only a couple condoms just in case and take things easy for the first time just so she doesnt get pregnant? maybe some oral sex? oh, and she also doesnt have access to birth control pills or female condoms bc of her young age. her parents would kill her.
Never use more than one
Never use more than one condom at once, it is easy to tear them with the friction. However, there are other forms of birth control besides condom and the pill so you may want to check those out.
first time
about a month ago, my boyfriend and i had sex for the first time, we lost our virginities to each other. we used a condom and afterwards, we checked for leaks and there were none. i was due for my period for this month last week and have still yet to recieve it. i don't think my time is changing, as it just did last month. does first time sex cause periods to switch times, be late, or skip without the girl being pregnant?

I have been sexually active since i was about 17 however i was single for about 2 years and therefore never had sex! I now have a new boyfriend and have started having sex again! my periods went haywire for a bit but have now settled down again even though I'm still having sex! your body will ajust to the level of hormones mine did!

oky i use durex and trojan ribbed condoms. i cant figure out what is wrong but like 1 out of like every 4 condoms i use break. i cant figure out why, and my girlfriend isnt on the pill and we are both teens so her getting pregnant isnt an option, ive spent over $100 on 'Plan B' (day after pill). She wants to get the pill but shes afraid her mom will find out and she wont get the shot. so is there a certain condom that would work better? are you sure you are putting them on right like hold down the "nipple/resevoir tip" while rolling it on and making sure its on properly, try using a larger condom possibly and make sure there is a lot of lubrication either from her natural fluids or from another source(the condom itself or like ky water based lubricats)
Uncomfortable
Condoms, the regular ones, are REALLY uncomfortable and tight on me. In the middle of sex it starts to hurt a bit and I can't think of what I'm doing anymore, all I can think of is how fast my dick is going to be constricted and fall off... :P

but i am also on antidepressents. Could those possibly damage the condom. We're pretty young so me geting preganant is literally the worst thing that could happen especially since i could never get an abortion and also im scared of giving birth.. sooo.. advice....info?
Don't worry
Anti-depression tablets shouldn't damage the condom! I know a few people who are on Anti - depression tablets (I did at one time as will) and still use condoms! Also if your taking the pill as well i shouldn't worry! Just make 100% certain with the pharmacist or your GP that the pill and the anti - depression tablets are not interacting with each other, other wise there will be problems!
Really tight???
Im relativly new to sex (5 months sexually active) and I was wondering if it was normal for condoms to be tight? I find it somewhat uncomfortable and they break fairly often. I got 3 boxes of regular trojan lubed ones, so I dont feel like they should be low in quality My gf is on birth control so this is an extra precaution and the breaking isnt much of an issue, i just hate the constriction! I have heard that big sizes were like putting a sock on it and they felt like nothing. Any better options?

Big condoms may feel like a sock but once you get in they dont the only problem is that when you cum it could come out and still get in/around her vag. Try extra thin ones they tend to be a little larger and since shes on BC and if she takes it regularly it should be okay but, you can also you a femal condom which are really good too, and those I doubt will break.

my boyfriend and i have been having sex for a couple of months now, and we both lost our virginity with each other, so all this sex stuff is new for us. we have been using the condom in order to not become pregnant. we try to be as safe as we can when using condoms by making sure that it is on properly and checking during intercourse to insure that the condom has not moved. i have been told that when this is done possibility of pregnancy is lowered drastically, but still some how him and i are always sick with worry over the thought of me becoming pregnant. with how careful me and my boyfriend are being should i be less or more concerned?
Advice
If at all possible, you yourself should get on a contraceptive method (pill or shot... my girlfriend uses the shot, far more effective, and no worrying about forgetting to take a pill either). This will double guard (though not completely protect) you from pregnancy. Should the condom break or semen somehow get out and into your vagina, you'll have that extra layer of protection (which, I must remind you, is not foolproof).
Also, don't make the mistake of "double wrapping" because that only increases your odds of breaking the condom.
I hate condoms...
I hate condoms... lol. best thing i have for pregnancy prevention, & I'd rate them more around 98% efficiency (about 1 in 50 break for me), but 98% ain't great when your genetics make you much more furtile. lol. Think about it: if you have sex once a day for two months, at 98% effectiveness, you'll probably have one break. in my experience, condoms feel a lot like pussy once your semen gets into em, so when they break you might not notice. The reason I've been on a pregnancy scare for the past 1 1/2 months (she has long cycles and it broke right after her period). so condoms are better than just about anything else, but i still hate em. lol

i'm on nuva ring, my one doctor said because of my medications i was on, either the medication would be less effective (bad) or my birth control wouldn't protect me fully. what i did was i stopped the meds that would effect the proper protection of my BC and save the condoms for when i run out of my rings.

I don't think the importance of using condoms can be over-stated these days ... even if you are on other birth-control, they are mandatory for safe sex!
